Bill Maher Reflects on Falling Out with Larry David

Bill Maher, the comedian and talk show host, revealed on Monday that his friendship with Larry David took a hit following a dinner with President Donald Trump at the White House last year.

In an interview with The New York Times Magazine, Maher noted that David was “so furious” about the meeting that he penned an essay in the New York Times titled, “Dinner with Adolf”. This rift, Maher mentioned, remains unresolved.

Jerry Seinfeld chimed in, saying that both Maher and David were feeling “a little frustrated” after attending a dinner at the White House hosted by Kid Rock.

Patton Oswalt Critiques Maher’s Approach to Trump

Maher had initially thought the meeting with Trump could be a chance to get insider information. “This is a regime of ‘what people are saying,'” he stated, suggesting that it was important to speak out if that was how the president gathered information.

However, just 12 days after the dinner, Maher surprised his HBO audience on “Real Time” by complimenting Trump, which left his friends astonished.

Maher Shares Mixed Feelings about Trump

During his show, Maher called Trump a “decent and thoughtful” individual, claiming he was notably more relatable in private than in his public persona. Yet he emphasized that what truly matters is Trump’s actions on the global stage.

This remark sparked concern among Trump’s aides, including actor Sean Penn, who expressed confusion over Maher’s take on the president’s likeability.

Maher’s compliments were, however, short-lived. He subsequently labeled Trump’s first 100 days as a series of events that warranted strong criticism.

Earlier this year, Trump dismissed the dinner as “a total waste of time,” describing Maher as a “disgusting guy” and a “very overrated lightweight.” He also brought up Maher’s complaints about other famous comedians, which have dotted their public exchanges.

After Maher critiqued comedian Dave Chappelle for his comments about free speech at the Riyadh Comedy Festival in 2025, Chappelle didn’t hold back, responding with pointed remarks about Maher’s commentary style.

Colleagues Weigh In

Interestingly, not everyone in Maher’s orbit was harsh. Louis CK once described Maher as “allergic to bulls,” adding that, while Maher might not be a “good guy,” he is still worth acknowledging.
