Bill Maher Critiques Left-Wing Response to Massachusetts Bar’s Mask Policy
Comedian Bill Maher had some pointed remarks for his own political side during an episode of HBO’s “Real Time” on Friday night. He poked fun at far-left critics who expressed outrage over a law requiring a Massachusetts lesbian bar to maintain a mask-optional policy for just one night a week.
The discussion stemmed from a viral story about the Last Ditch Bar and Arts Venue in Greenfield, Massachusetts, which captured national attention after a report by the Boston Globe highlighted significant community backlash against the bar’s decision to drop its COVID-era mask mandate for one evening each week.
“Here’s what’s happening at the Last Ditch Bar,” Maher said, pointing out the establishment’s rather progressive mission statement: “For dykes, transsexuals, gender freaks, workers, and friends.”
He then humorously remarked about the order of priorities in the mission, quipping, “I love the way workers and friends are fourth and fifth on the list.”
Maher further elaborated on the bar’s financial difficulties, noting that many potential customers claimed they could not afford the cover charge, which led the bar to allow entry regardless of payment.
“But economically, it wasn’t working,” Maher explained. “Even though there was a cover charge, if you couldn’t pay, they wouldn’t make you pay. Homeless folks were welcomed in, but, oddly enough, not the cops.” He noted that the bar previously required masks but had proposed a change to keep its doors open.
Noting the dire financial situation, he added that one owner was reportedly living in her truck.
In an effort to keep the venue viable, Last Ditch decided to make Saturday nights mask-optional, expressing their intentions to their immunocompromised clientele with a post on Instagram.
A backlash erupted almost immediately, with locals gathering for a community meeting to voice their concerns about the bar’s new policy. Some critics took issue with a mediator’s presence, citing their background as a White therapist during the discussion.
Maher jumped into the controversy, criticizing far-left patrons for their intolerant reactions. He commented, “And of course, the tolerant left did what they always do — became very intolerant and left.” He shared some of the harsh comments made about the bar, including aggressive statements reflecting a shocking level of hostility.
Tim Graham from NewsBusters pointed out the irony in both sides of the political spectrum, reflecting on how shocking it is that mask mandates still exist in a bar setting in 2026. He mentioned that many might perceive a hint of authoritarianism in the left’s furious reaction to the bar’s mask policy change, particularly when the bar was clearly struggling financially.
Maher’s critiques emphasized a common theme in his commentary: that supposed tolerance often turns into intolerance when individuals or establishments do not align with specific ideological beliefs.
