Bill Maher shares his persistent fears of being canceled

Bill Maher Discusses Fear of Cancellation on Podcast

Liberal comedian Bill Maher recently shared his concerns about potential cancellation during an episode of the “Club Random” podcast. Speaking with actress Drew Barrymore about the topic of free speech, he expressed that it’s “not dangerous” to engage in controversial discussions. However, he confessed that he is worried his casual remarks might be used against him in a way that could jeopardize his career.

Maher remarked on the changes in the cultural landscape, noting, “We’ve brought about a change in the atmosphere,” particularly after Democrats faced significant losses in 2024. He seemed to hint that the era of left-wing censorship is becoming less effective. When Barrymore asked him if anything still genuinely frightened him, he reflected on his apprehensions regarding private conversations being misconstrued.

“Yeah, what scares me… I like to think that private conversations won’t upset anyone. But, you know, they could,” he said. He acknowledged the paranoia that accompanies his role, stating, “Did something bad happen?” and noted that while his fears may seem trivial compared to others, they’re nonetheless intrusive.

Maher elaborated that this feeling isn’t about something as severe as hunger but still represents a notable grievance in his life. He previously discussed his cancellation anxiety during a 2023 CNN interview, brushing off comments from others about feeling indifferent towards such concerns.

Looking back, Maher has faced backlash for his remarks in the past, including those made shortly after 9/11, which led to his show’s cancellation by ABC. His comments about the U.S. being “co-ill” for its military actions drew ire, culminating in the show’s abrupt end. However, he bounced back in 2003 with “Real Time with Bill Maher,” a program that continues on HBO today.
