Bill Maher Comments on Higher Education and Trump
Comedian Bill Maher recently expressed his views on President Trump’s criticisms of higher education, labeling university campuses as “indoctrination factories” that need some serious reevaluation.
During the latest episode of HBO’s “Real-Time with Bill Maher,” he stated that while he doesn’t entirely agree with Trump’s methods, he can see where some of the president’s critiques stem from.
“I’m not against the idea entirely. Academia has needed a jolt for a while,” Maher remarked. “I don’t agree with how he goes about it, certainly not through punitive measures against scientific research,” he added.
“Our universities have been out of control for a long time. They’ve turned into places lacking any diversity of thought,” he continued.
Trump has been vocal about wanting to dismantle the so-called “woke culture” in American universities, which he claims is rooted in leftist ideology.
Prominent institutions like the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton, and Cornell University have faced potential cuts in federal funding, linked to accusations of anti-Semitism or their policies on transgender athletes.
Additionally, the Department of Education signaled that universities failing to dismiss diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives could see reductions in federal funding.
Maher highlighted a recent incident from October 7, 2023, when a student celebrated violent events in Israel while on campus.
“You don’t need to be Donald Trump to sense that something has been off in higher education for quite a while. When conservative viewpoints are silenced, it raises a lot of concerns,” he said.
He questioned the enthusiasm some expressed over the events of October 7, wondering why there was applause for such a tragic occurrence.
