House Republicans Propose New Bill for Maternal Support

House Republicans are intensifying their initiatives aimed at assisting women in caring for their newborns post-birth. Notably, Rep. Ashley Hinson from Iowa has introduced the Healthy Pregnancy Assistance Act. This legislation would allow expectant mothers to receive financial assistance from the child’s father before the baby arrives.

This move comes as Republicans seek to bolster their pro-family stance amidst claims from Democrats that they are anti-choice and lack support for parenting women.

Under Hinson’s proposed legislation, states would be required to set up a system where biological fathers contribute at least 50% of the out-of-pocket medical expenses related to pregnancy and childbirth. This includes health insurance premiums, but interestingly, costs associated with abortion are not part of this coverage. Additionally, before any financial obligation takes effect, the mother must formally request payment from the father.

At present, single mothers can only file for child support starting at the moment of birth in most states. So, many women might find themselves grappling with pregnancy costs without any prior financial assistance.

Hinson has been active in presenting bills focused on supporting women during childbirth. One such bill emphasizes that pregnant college students should be informed about their rights and options available on campus, particularly concerning alternatives to abortion.

This latest proposal is bipartisan and has the backing of Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivett, a Democrat from Michigan. It seeks to improve access to midwifery education and career training, particularly in less serviced regions of the country.

In Hinson’s words, “I’m a mom on a mission to make life easier for fellow moms and families.” She aims to enhance maternal care access, provide resources during pregnancy, and improve childcare options for growing families. She also expressed pride in advocating for families in Iowa and nationwide, stating that “strong families make strong countries.”
