Billie Eilish Critiques ICE in Acceptance Speech

During her acceptance speech for the 2026 MLK Jr. Beloved Community Environmental Justice Award, pop star Billie Eilish seemed to denounce the activities of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). She claimed that individuals are being “kidnapped” and “beaten to death.”

While she didn’t explicitly name ICE, her remarks hinted at ongoing concerns surrounding immigration raids. “Honestly, I don’t believe I deserve this award,” Eilish stated, reflecting on the paradox of celebrating environmental justice in such troubled times. It feels, maybe, quite odd when the pursuit of that justice seems more elusive than ever.

Eilish continued, lamenting the state of society: “We are seeing our neighbors kidnapped, peaceful protesters assaulted and murdered, civil rights stripped away, and vital resources for combating the climate crisis being diminished, all while wealth dictates access to food and healthcare.”

It really seems like this administration doesn’t prioritize protecting the planet or communities. And it’s tough to feel celebratory when safety isn’t a given in our own neighborhoods.

Her comments likely referenced the recent killing of Renee Good by an ICE agent, which has sparked widespread protests in response to claims of wrongful death. This incident seems to have resonated deeply across Minnesota and elsewhere in the U.S.

Eilish had previously referred to ICE as a “terrorist group” in an Instagram post following Good’s death, describing the agency as one that tears families apart and terrorizes citizens without making streets safer. “Enough is enough,” she declared.

A statement from DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin later challenged Eilish’s views. She suggested Eilish might not have seen newly released footage that portrayed the deceased as obstructing federal law enforcement. McLaughlin insisted that ICE doesn’t separate families and described Eilish’s rhetoric as irresponsible, allegedly contributing to a significant rise in assaults against law enforcement.

In a world filled with complexities and contradictions, Eilish’s remarks paint a vivid picture of the ongoing struggle for justice and safety, a struggle that often feels tangled and unresolved.
