Joe Brady Regrets Comments on Coaching Approach
Buffalo Bills head coach Joe Brady recently expressed regret regarding his remarks on “The Pat McAfee Show.”
Brady, who was elevated from his previous position as offensive coordinator, seemed to be attempting to set himself apart from Sean McDermott, the former Bills head coach dismissed after the team’s loss to the Broncos in the AFC divisional round.
When appearing on the show, he was asked how he planned to engage with the players on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.
His intention was to indicate that his leadership would be balanced, but the example he chose quickly turned out to be an awkward misstep.
“I’m not an offensive head coach. I’m a head coach,” Brady stated. “I just told the guys, I can’t wait for the first practice, for Josh Allen to throw a king pick, and I can celebrate with the defense. I want the offensive tackles to know that I’m with them. And I’m not out there yelling at the defense. It’s about, well, let’s just go, and I want them to feel that.”
While Brady aimed to highlight the competitive spirit of the team, the specific reference to celebrating a mistake made by Allen struck a more awkward note than he likely anticipated.
On the latest episode of the “Fitz & Whitworth” podcast, hosted by former NFL players Ryan Fitzpatrick and Andrew Whitworth, Brady reflected on his choice of words and admitted he regretted how he expressed himself.
“I regret that,” he said. “You can call BS on it—I’ll be mad if you do, but I do regret it. I won’t pretend otherwise.”
He emphasized that he still wants to back his team in every regard, but acknowledged that his wording had been poorly chosen. It didn’t quite show the respect he meant to convey for Allen, who had a tough game with four turnovers during the Bills’ season-ending loss.
“I want to celebrate with the defense,” Brady noted. “But to do that, it means celebrating mistakes like a fumble by James Cook or a pick from Josh. I need to sort this out. The moment I said that, I knew I might end up regretting it later. I’ll have to reevaluate.”
