Buffalo Bills Win First Regular-Season Game at Highmark Stadium
The anticipation for regular-season football at the new Highmark Stadium finally came to an end on Thursday night. The stadium, hosting its inaugural regular-season game, saw the Buffalo Bills take on the Detroit Lions.
Star quarterback Josh Allen didn’t disappoint. He led an impressive first half, guiding the Bills to a 27-10 lead at halftime. Allen threw three touchdown passes and added two rushing scores, ultimately powering the Bills to a 41-31 victory.
Remarkably, this marked the fourth game of Allen’s career where he recorded five touchdowns. Just a week prior, he had thrown two touchdown passes and ran for two in a close 36-31 win against the Houston Texans.
The new $2.1 billion stadium, which officially opened recently, is located right across from the Bills’ former home. Fans were treated to a celebratory fireworks display before the game, which Allen followed with his own fireworks in the form of touchdown drives on each of Buffalo’s first four possessions. Running back James Cook also had a standout performance, rushing for 134 yards and sealing the game with a 1-yard touchdown run in the final minutes.
With those two rushing touchdowns, Allen’s career total climbed to 83, tying him with Jim Taylor for the 18th spot on the NFL’s all-time list. Moreover, this victory marked his 90th regular-season win, a milestone achieved by only four quarterbacks in the first nine seasons of their careers.
The Lions struggled due to injuries on their defense and a limited offensive line, which affected their ability to support both Jahmyr Gibbs and Jared Goff. After breaking back from a 21-0 deficit and narrowing the score to 34-24, the Lions’ offensive momentum faltered in the fourth quarter. Backed up to their own 10-yard line, they went three-and-out and were forced to punt after Goff’s passes were tipped and Gibbs was stopped short.
In the end, Goff completed 26 of 38 passes for 327 yards and four touchdowns. Amon-Ra St. Brown had a notable game, with nine catches for 142 yards and two touchdowns. Gibbs contributed an 11-yard touchdown catch but managed only 52 rushing yards. Sam LaPorta also added a 1-yard touchdown reception.
Despite being an open-air stadium, Highmark is designed to endure Buffalo’s challenging weather. Features include underground heating coils that prevent the natural-grass field from freezing and a snow-melt system that’s the largest in the world, activated by roof sensors detecting heavy snowfall. Most fans will enjoy protection from the wind thanks to the venue’s 360-degree canopy.
Highmark Stadium can accommodate 60,108 fans, roughly 10,000 fewer than the previous stadium.
