LOS ANGELES (AP) – Friends of Rob and Michelle Reiner, including notable figures like Billy Crystal, Albert Brooks, Martin Short, and Larry David, have released a heartfelt statement honoring the couple while acknowledging their passion for films and their country.
“Drawing from the wisdom of his father Karl and mentor Norman Lear, Rob Reiner not only emerged as a talented comedic actor but also as an exceptional storyteller. There’s hardly another director with such a diverse range of influence. Whether in comedies, dramas, mockumentaries, or documentaries, he consistently stood out, mesmerizing audiences who eagerly anticipated his films,” the group shared in a statement provided to The Associated Press.
The magazine remarked on Rob Reiner’s films, which include classics like “A Few Good Men,” “When Harry Met Sally,” and “The Princess Bride,” noting his unique comedic style, profound dialogue, and a dramatic edge that was both sophisticated and striking.
This statement was released two days after Rob and Michelle Reiner were discovered dead at their Brentwood home in Los Angeles. Their son, Nick Reiner, faces two murder charges, accused of fatally stabbing his parents.
The joint tribute came from Reiner’s long-time colleagues, including Crystal, Brooks, Short, David, and their partners. Other notable signatories were author Alan Zweibel, composer Marc Shaiman, director Barry Levinson, and former U.S. Ambassador to Spain, James Kostos.
“He had a genuine love for actors, and he elevated the talents of writers. His greatest gift was the sense of freedom he offered. If they had ideas, he was receptive and included them in the creative process. It felt like a true collaboration. Working with him as a filmmaker was an honor, but that only scratches the surface of his legacy,” the statement reflected.
The Reiners were steadfast supporters of the Democratic Party and advocates for various political initiatives.
“Rob was a passionate citizen, deeply invested in the country he cherished. Alongside his beloved wife Michele, they were an ideal partnership; robust and dedicated. Both devoted significant portions of their lives to uplifting their fellow citizens… Together, they were a remarkable force: dynamic, selfless, and motivational,” the statement continued.
“As their friends, we will miss them endlessly,” one of them remarked, concluding with a quote from “It’s a Wonderful Life,” a film that held special significance for Reiner.
“‘Each person’s life impacts so many others, and without them, there would be a significant void, wouldn’t there?’ You can’t even imagine,” stated the conclusion.
The news of the Reiner family’s passing has left Hollywood in shock, particularly given their embodiment of a warm, humorous spirit.
Numerous stars and politicians paid their respects over the weekend following their deaths, although many close friends of the Reiners have yet to publicly comment.
