Billy Crystal pays tribute to his late friend Rob Reiner with a touching message after the director's passing.

Billy Crystal and his wife, Janice, shared a statement in remembrance of their friends, Rob Reiner and Michelle Singer Reiner. They referred to Rob as a “great comedian” and a “master storyteller.”

In a heartfelt message released to the Associated Press on Tuesday, the Crystals were joined by a number of other notable figures, including Albert and Kimberly Brooks, Martin Short, Alan Zweibel, Larry David, and others.

The statement reflected on the magic of cinema: “It’s still an unforgettable thrill to be in a darkened theater full of strangers having a shared experience, laughing, crying, screaming in fear, and watching intense drama unfold.” They emphasized a connection with the audience and a call to tell the stories that resonate with them.

Rob Reiner, they noted, learned from his father, Karl, and mentor, Norman Lear. He evolved into a phenomenal comedic actor and a skilled storyteller. His versatility—from comedies to drama—made him a unique figure in filmmaking, and audiences eagerly flocked to his films.

The Crystals continued with praise for Reiner’s dialogue, musical choices, and the elegance he brought to both comedy and drama. They highlighted his collaborative spirit, stating, “His greatest gift was freedom,” allowing actors and writers to feel part of the creative process. It was indeed a privilege to collaborate with him in such a capacity.

Rob was also described as a dedicated citizen, committed to improving the country he cherished. Together with Michelle, they made a remarkable pair, contributing selflessly and inspiring those around them. Their friends expressed a deep sense of loss in their absence.

The statement concluded with a reflective quote from one of Reiner’s favorite films, *It’s a Wonderful Life*, capturing the sentiment that “each person’s life touches so many other lives.” It underscored an awareness that their impact would be missed.

Crystal starred in Reiner’s classic film, *When Harry Met Sally*, released in 1989.

As previously reported, the filmmaker and his wife were tragically found dead in their Brentwood, California home on December 14. Rob was 78 years old, while Michelle was 70.

The family released a statement expressing deep sorrow over the sudden loss and requested privacy during this difficult time.

The investigation revealed that Rob and Michelle were found with fatal wounds, and their son, Nick, was later arrested on murder charges related to their deaths.
