Rockdale County Commissioner Doreen Williams said the family had to be evacuated.
“If you could see a picture of the plume passing over our house, you would understand the seriousness of this,” she said.
At a Sept. 29 press conference, Rockdale County Fire Rescue Chief Marian McDaniel said there was a sprinkler head failure and a “water-reactive chemical” caused the “plume.”
She said that after the sprinklers went off, they “mixed with that chemical and from there the wiring and everything else led to the fire.” “So it was contained to a small area on the rooftop and contained very quickly,” she said.
Earlier this month, BioLab announced that chlorine, one of the chemicals stored at the facility, was released during the fire.
“The fire and the water used to extinguish it caused smoke to emit from the facility. Additionally, when chemicals stored within the facility come into contact with water, they slowly release chlorine. “This release, and the water required to control it, caused a continuous visible fog over our facility.” said on October 4th.
