Job Market Shifts for New Graduates

Larry McDonald, founder of Bear Trap Report, recently shared insights on “Mornings with Maria” about potential risks in the semiconductor market, market concentration, and how upcoming tech IPOs could influence Wall Street.

Many recent graduates are venturing into southern cities, which, I suppose, makes it a bit more challenging for others trying to kickstart their careers in different areas. A study by ADP analyzed 53 major metropolitan areas in the U.S., focusing on factors like jobs, wages, and affordability for workers in their 20s with degrees.

The findings highlighted Birmingham, Alabama, and Tampa, Florida, as prime locations for new graduates seeking employment. Birmingham impressively ranks in the 85th percentile or higher for wages, affordability, and job availability, while Tampa, despite having average scores for wages and affordability, has topped employment rankings.

Following closely behind are San Jose, California, and Columbus, Ohio.

ADP Reports Job Growth in April

The other notable cities in the top ten include Raleigh, North Carolina; Tulsa, Oklahoma; Nashville, Tennessee; and Charlotte, North Carolina. Surprisingly, New York City made its way into the list, scoring 7th and 10th place, respectively. The Wall Street Journal’s report on ADP’s findings suggests that the job recovery for college graduates is varying significantly across the country.

Regarding Columbus and San Jose, while there were some inconsistencies in the overall rankings, such as San Jose being in the 12th percentile for affordability, their positions still improved this year.

AI’s Growing Influence in Creative Sectors

Some metropolitan areas, however, saw a decrease in their rankings. Cities like Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Baltimore, Maryland; and Austin, Texas—once in the top five last year—have slipped this time around. Austin’s ranking fell from the 94th to 77th percentile, and Baltimore dropped from 96th to 75th.

Graduates Face Tougher Job Market

Interestingly, companies that showed significant improvement last year include several in the top ten, such as Tampa, which leaped from the 54th to the 98th percentile, as well as San Jose and Tulsa, which both made substantial gains. Even Fresno, California, climbed impressive heights, moving from the 22nd to the 79th percentile, although it didn’t quite make it into the top ten.
