Björk Advocates for Greenland’s Independence Amid Rising Tensions
Icelandic avant-garde singer Björk has reached out to the people of Greenland, urging them to consider breaking free from Danish rule. This plea comes in light of renewed discussions about Greenland’s future, particularly as US President Donald Trump emphasizes national security interests concerning the island.
The topic of Greenland’s status has gained prominence following an American military operation aimed at the ouster of Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro. Amid this backdrop, Trump hinted at the possibility of the U.S. taking control of Greenland, echoing ambitions that date back to the 19th century.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Friedrickson reacted strongly, asserting that the U.S. had “no right to annex” Greenland. In a surprising retort, Trump insisted that controlling Greenland was essential for U.S. defense purposes.
In a notable diplomatic intervention, Björk, who hails from Reykjavík, has called for Greenlandic independence, reminiscent of Iceland’s own path during World War II. She expressed her support for Greenlanders in their fight for sovereignty, reflecting on Iceland’s relief in gaining independence back in 1944.
“I wish all Greenlanders a blessing in their fight for independence,” she wrote. Though Björk is not of Inuit descent, she referenced historical injustices faced by Greenland’s indigenous population, citing instances of mistreatment by the Danish government. This includes a scandal where thousands of girls in Greenland were fitted with contraceptive coils without consent between 1966 and 1991. In light of this, Prime Minister Friedrickson recently offered a formal apology for these actions.
Still, Björk pointed out that despite granting Greenland internal governance in 1979, issues with the Danish state persist. She expressed concern that the potential U.S. control might lead to even harsher conditions for Greenlanders, musing about the painful history of colonialism.
“The idea of my fellow Greenlanders transitioning from one oppressive colonizer to another is too cruel to envision,” she stated.
This isn’t the first time Björk has voiced her support for Greenland’s independence; her 2007 song “Declaration of Independence” advocated for the same cause.
Greenland’s former prime minister, Moute Egede, previously supported the idea of independence and aimed to foster closer ties with the U.S. regarding defense and resource extraction. However, this stance has shifted under the current leadership of Jens Frederik Nielsen, who is more cautious about pursuing independence.
On the international front, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has also expressed opposition to Trump’s ambitions regarding Greenland, emphasizing that the future of the island should be solely determined by Greenland and Denmark.
Additionally, Raphael Glucksmann from the European Parliament has suggested that the EU should take a proactive stance against Trump’s claims, proposing the establishment of a European military base in Greenland to counter U.S. assertions about security concerns there.
Amid all this, Trump made light of Denmark’s security measures for Greenland, joking about their recent decision to add more dog sleds as a military enhancement.
