Videos of the protests posted on social media showed protesters speaking directly to Democrats.
“The speaker should take up the bill now. This is their bill. Their name is on it. They are killing their bill because they are afraid of the governor,” said a Black member of the Coalition for a Fair and Equal California.
The Congressional Black Caucus has introduced a reparations bill and said more needs to be done, but critics have accused the caucus of dodging responsibility in order to keep Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom's presidential hopes alive.
“Now, they're going to see this and they're going to get mad at us,” he continued. “They're going to kill their bills and get mad at us. They're killing their bills because they're afraid of the governor. We don't care.” [expletive] “Raise your bill now, now, now.”
State Senator Steven Bradford, who introduced the reparations bill, said the bill will likely be vetoed by Newsom because his group has refused to include changes proposed by his office.
Other members of the group said the decision would have a negative impact on Black support for Harris' presidential campaign.
“The governor needs to understand that the world is watching California and that this directly impacts your friend Kamala Harris who is running for president,” said the Black woman. “This directly impacts you, so take up the bill now, vote for it, sign it. We've been waiting over 400 years.”
“We are deeply grateful for this recognition,” said Camilla Moore, chair of the California Reparations Task Force. KCRA Television They called the decision “unjust” and took part in protests at parliament.
“What we saw was a complete betrayal of their constituents by the California Legislative Black Caucus,” Moore said. “They chose to put their own ego and self-interest above the people they claim to serve.”
