Blakeman extends former Rep. Peter King’s $8,000 monthly counterterrorism contract without legislative consent.

Blakeman extends former Rep. Peter King’s $8,000 monthly counterterrorism contract without legislative consent.

Democrats in Nassau County are understandably upset after Bruce Blakeman reestablished a contract with Peter King, his long-time political ally, on Monday. Republican county leaders criticized the lack of transparency and perceived cronyism involved in the process.

King, who is 81 and a former Republican senator, was first brought on board in November 2023 as Blakeman’s “secret advisor” focused on counterterrorism and homeland security matters.

Documents indicate Nassau County has already expended $192,000 on King’s services, and the contract is set to be extended until October by county officials.

“This no-bid contract for political insiders like Peter King is part of why Long Islanders face some of the highest taxes in the nation,” remarked Seth Coslow, a Democrat running against Blakeman in the upcoming November elections. “Blakeman treats taxpayers like an ATM for his allies.”

He continued, “This so-called ‘delicate’ legal work just seems like a cover for secret payments, while the GOP is benefiting and taxpayers are struggling.”

In response, Blakeman dismissed the criticism from Democrats as “silly.”

He emphasized King’s extensive background, which includes nearly three decades in Congress where he chaired the House Homeland Security Committee and played a significant role in emergency response efforts after 9/11. King has represented both Nassau and Suffolk counties during his tenure.

Blakeman stated, “Rep. King has the highest security clearance in federal, military, and law enforcement sectors, along with a wealth of knowledge and a vast network of intelligence experts dedicated to helping Nassau County.”

According to Blakeman, investment in security is crucial, especially as Nassau police officers prepare for winter weather challenges.

Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder lent his support to King’s role, stating that King is “available 24/7” and often collaborates with law enforcement officials across various jurisdictions. Ryder mentioned King’s involvement in significant security planning efforts, including last year’s Cricket World Cup at Eisenhower Park.

However, Democrats argued that Blakeman’s actions raise concerns about safety and security, alleging favoritism and a lack of transparency.

Blakeman has utilized a narrow exception that allows county executives to hire outside professionals for “very sensitive” issues, while records show that he has awarded over $500,000 to similar contracts since he took office. This includes legal work related to Governor Kathy Hochul’s contentious affordable housing initiative, involving a previous contract worth $250,000 associated with former President Trump.

Generally, county contracts demand a vote from the Nassau Congressional Committee and should follow a competitive bidding process to ensure the best price for taxpayers. In typical situations, only contracts under $1,000 can avoid such requirements, yet King’s agreements did not undergo legislative scrutiny or reach other potential vendors.

“Even if it’s legal, that doesn’t make it ethical,” Koslow commented. “Honestly, it feels like handouts.”

Blakeman and King have maintained a connection for years, appearing together at multiple events, including the launch for Blakeman’s recent reelection campaign. Over the last 25 years, King and his committee have contributed over $1.1 million to local political matters, including substantial donations to Blakeman and the Nassau GOP.

Since leaving office in 2021, King has worked as a lobbyist and consultant, insisting he has kept strong ties with federal law enforcement and national security officials while dedicating several hours weekly to county business.

“I’m not saying I necessarily need to take someone else’s place,” King told Newsday. “But having an outsider can really add another perspective.”

Blakeman has yet to clarify if he intends to renew King’s contract beyond this year.
