Blizzard Faces Sexual Harassment Lawsuit from Former Employee
A former female employee of Blizzard Entertainment has filed a significant sexual harassment lawsuit against the gaming company and its parent firm Activision, known for titles like “Call of Duty.” She claims that during her 14 years in Blizzard’s sound department, starting in 2009, she encountered a workplace culture reminiscent of a “frat boy” environment where male colleagues engaged in inappropriate behavior, including harassment and viewing pornography on the job.
The plaintiff, who has chosen to remain unnamed, alleges that a co-worker made a serious attempt to assault her by taking her to his apartment under false pretenses. There, he supposedly restricted her movements, groped her, and threatened her with violence.
According to her accusations, this same co-worker reportedly pressured her for dates, spread lewd rumors, and used gender-specific slurs in the presence of other male employees. In total, she identified about ten men at the company responsible for different forms of sexual harassment, including inappropriate touches and outright assault.
Another individual is accused of “continuously” harassing her over five years, suggesting that her career would be in jeopardy if she ever reported his actions. It’s disheartening to see how frequently these things can happen, and how often they seem to go unchecked.
Additionally, she claims that the audio director at Blizzard also engaged in unwanted touching and retaliated against her by undermining her work when she rebuffed his advances.
Despite her attempts to report these incidents to management, she stated that her complaints went unaddressed, leading her to feel increasingly isolated. This lack of response, apparently, contributed to a toxic work environment that took a toll on her mental health, requiring ongoing psychiatric help before she ultimately left the company in April 2024.
A spokesperson for Blizzard confirmed that they take such allegations seriously and emphasize their commitment to fostering a respectful work environment. They asserted that they have strong policies and systems in place meant to combat harassment and discrimination, though it’s relevant to observe how effective those measures truly are.
The woman is seeking unspecified compensatory damages, which include lost wages and benefits. This case isn’t isolated; Blizzard has faced scrutiny before regarding its workplace practices. In 2023, the company reached a $50 million settlement related to previous discrimination claims that accused them of paying women less and denying promotions based on gender.
