Blue Cross Blue Shield Cuts Jobs and Positions in Michigan

Michigan’s Blue Cross Blue Shield has laid off nearly 220 non-union staff members and has also cut over 400 open positions during the week starting June 9. This decision was confirmed on June 11, as the company aims to reduce its administrative costs by $285 million this year.

As part of these efforts, many non-union employees opted for buyouts offered earlier in January, resulting in approximately $94 million in savings. Furthermore, the insurer has also let go of around 250 contracted workers in recent months.

In an email, the company stated, “These initiatives have positioned us well to achieve our financial objectives, but we found that additional employment measures were necessary.”

CEO Tricia Keith has been open with employees about the financial pressures the company faces, including rising costs related to medical and pharmaceutical services and a spike in expensive health systems.

Last year, health insurance companies were targeting a $600 million reduction in administrative costs over a three-year period. According to Blue Cross, it has successfully cut $200 million in these expenses by 2024.

“Management costs account for nine cents of each premium dollar. Given that we are now implementing double-digit premium increases for our customers, we urge them to evaluate their internal management to control costs,” Blue Cross mentioned in a statement.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan has around 11,000 employees, making it the state’s largest health insurer, according to a spokesperson.

Keith succeeded Daniel Roupe as the president and CEO of Michigan Blue Cross Blue Shield earlier this year.
