The Yankees might have taken two out of three games from the Blue Jays over the weekend, but that didn’t stop one Toronto broadcaster from criticizing them. After a rough 12-2 loss on Tuesday, Blue Jays analyst Buck Martinez didn’t hold back. He expressed his clear thoughts about the Yankees on air, specifically calling for a victory over them.
“Honestly, the Yankees aren’t a good team,” Martínez stated during the seventh inning. “It doesn’t matter what their record says. They throw a lot of wild pitches and make plenty of mistakes on the field. Their base running isn’t great either. If they can’t hit a home run, they really struggle to win.”
Interestingly, when you compare their wild pitches this season, the Yankees have committed 47, while the Blue Jays have 29. Their number of errors isn’t drastically different; the Yankees have 82, while the Blue Jays have 81.
Heading into the weekend, the Yankees were trailing the Blue Jays in the standings. They lost their first game but managed to clinch the next two, wrapping up Sunday’s matchup with a close 4-3 final. This brought them within two games of the AL East lead.
However, Tuesday presented a chance to close that gap further. Unfortunately for the Yankees, their bullpen faltered, allowing seven runs in seven innings against the Tigers.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone commented on the struggle, saying, “It’s a tough night; still, many good things from prior games that we managed to close out remain.” Despite trailing by two runs at the bottom of the ninth, the Blue Jays managed to tie the game thanks to a two-run single by former Yankee Isaiah Kiner-Falefa. In the tenth inning, Tyler Heinemann capped off the comeback with a walk-off fielder’s choice, securing a surprising 4-3 win and extending their lead in the division.
