Blue Origin rocket owned by Jeff Bezos bursts into a large fireball in Florida

Blue Origin Rocket Explosion Lights Up Florida Skies

The Blue Origin New Glenn rocket experienced a significant explosion while being test-fired at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, creating a massive fireball that was visible for miles around. This incident unfolded around 9 p.m. on Thursday.

Sadly, the explosion resulted in the destruction of the rocket itself, along with the erector gantry and one of the light towers nearby. Space expert Ken Kramer elaborated that the rocket had been loaded with propellant for a static burn test, which was not intended as a full launch. The plan was merely to fire the engines for a few seconds to ensure everything was operational ahead of upcoming launches.

In a statement shared on social media, Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos noted, “All of our employees are safe,” indicating there were no injuries reported. He added that while it might be too early to determine the exact cause of the explosion, the team was already working to figure it out. Bezos also expressed determination, saying, “It’s a very tough day, but we’ll rebuild everything that needs to be rebuilt and get back to flying. It’s worth it.”

Fortunately, U.S. Space Command East Range confirmed that first responders arrived quickly and ensured safety at the scene.

The now-destroyed New Glenn rocket had been slated to launch in June, carrying 48 satellites owned by Amazon for the Leo Internet project, which aims to rival Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite system. Musk, who has also experienced rocket explosions with SpaceX, expressed his sympathy via social media, wishing Bezos a swift recovery from this setback.

Furthermore, the New Glenn was also expected to participate in a lunar lander test flight aligned with NASA’s Artemis mission. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman remarked on the challenges of developing new heavy-lift launch capabilities, acknowledging the difficulty of spaceflight. He affirmed the commitment to investigate this anomaly thoroughly and support a return to launching the rocket.

In a notable previous achievement, Blue Origin successfully launched an all-female Celebrity Crew that included pop star Katy Perry and Bezos’ then-fiancee, Lauren Sanchez. The mission took them 100 kilometers above Earth, where they enjoyed several minutes of weightlessness before returning.
