New York Democrats proposed a bill in January requiring all students age 8 and older to learn about the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021.
Introducing assemblies members Charles Lavine, Deborah Glick, Tony Simone and Bill A3966 The state's education laws will be amended to mandate lessons from events at all K-12 schools, and will appear in the bill's textbooks with lessons on slavery and the Holocaust.
The lesson is intended to “foster a patriotism and a spirit of civic service and duties, and to raise children of moral and intellectual qualities essential to preparing them to fulfill their obligations of citizenship in peace or war.” Bill text status. “Since the war of 1812, when the British troops set fire to the Capitol, the Washington Hall of Power was overtaken by violent intruders, as on January 6th,” Lavin said. . Schools that do not comply with the law are at risk of funding being revoked, the bill says.
