BMW recently initiated a recall of approximately 720,800 vehicles across multiple models in response to the risk of a short circuit in the water pump connector.
NHTSA said the recall covers 2012-2015 X1 sDrive28i and X1 xDrive28i vehicles, 2012-2016 Z4 sDrive28i, 528i, 528i xDrive, 328i and 328xi vehicles, 2016-2018 X5 xdrive 40e vehicles, 2014-2016 228i, 228xi, 428i, 428i xDrive and 328xi Gran Turismo vehicles, 2013-2017 X3 sDrive28i and X3 xDrive28i vehicles, 2015-2018 X4 xDrive28i vehicles and 2015-2016 428xi vehicles.
BMW recalls over 291,000 vehicles due to risk of rear cargo rail detachment
The NHTSA recall report states that affected BMW vehicles may be at increased risk of a “thermal event” if liquid gets into the water pump’s electrical plug connector, causing a short circuit. The issue is related to “insufficient sealing of the water pump,” according to the report.

BMW filed a recall report with the NHTSA a week ago, which the agency later tweeted about it.
According to the recall report, affected BMW customers will receive recall notices and instructions on how to repair their vehicles by mail in early October.
“As of August 2024, BMW is aware of approximately 18 customer complaints, concerns and/or field cases in the U.S. market that are related or potentially related to the issue identified in this report,” BMW said in a recall timeline. “BMW has not received any reports of accidents or injuries related to this issue, and BMW is not aware of any of them.”

You will need to go to a BMW center to fix the water pump connector problem.

Staff will inspect both the water pump and plug connector to see if they need to be replaced, as well as install a shield that “diverts fluid that may drip from the positive crankcase ventilation system’s intake chamber into the pump,” according to the recall report.

The BMW Group produces millions of vehicles each year across its various brands. In 2023, it is reported that BMW produced 2.34 million vehicles and the other brands produced around 321,400 vehicles.
