Phillies Show Positive Interest in Bo Bichette

In contrast to the Eagles, the Phillies seem to be making strides in key situations.

Monday’s discussion between free agent Bo Bichette and the Phillies apparently “went very well.” This is according to a report that suggests such a meeting might enhance his possibilities of signing, especially as he noted that the organization is “top-notch.”

Furthermore, the Phillies’ interest in Bichette is significant for the Yankees, who have also eyed the Blue Jays’ shortstop amidst a complicated negotiation process involving outfielder Cody Bellinger.

Bichette, now 27, is among the most sought-after free agents, and as spring training nears, it seems likely he will be departing Toronto.

Both the Yankees and Phillies have ramped up their efforts to land him, with the Phillies looking to bolster their lineup to better compete with the Dodgers in the National League.

Of course, negotiations often come down to finances. Still, there are some advantages for the reigning NL East champions, as Heyman points out. The roster is promising, Citizens Bank Park favors hitters, and the addition of former Toronto bench coach Don Mattingly in a similar role could be enticing. Plus, the proximity of the team’s spring training base in Clearwater, Florida, to where many infielders live is another appealing factor.

However, pursuing Bichette could lead to some awkward choices regarding the team’s existing structure. It raises the possibility of trading third baseman Alec Bohm or potentially not bringing back catcher JT Realmuto.

With Trea Turner already signed long-term as the shortstop, it’s uncertain if he may shift to play second or third base, yet top executive Dave Dombrowski seems optimistic about the team’s direction.

Should Bichette land in Philadelphia, it might affect the Yankees’ strategy regarding Bellinger, especially since Bellinger’s request for a long-term agreement hasn’t been met. The Yankees have proposed a five-year deal worth $155 million, but Bellinger is seeking a seven-year arrangement.

Another significant player still on the market is Kyle Tucker, but speculation suggests the Mets might be more likely to pursue him rather than the Yankees.
