Kennedy Center Board Proposes Naming Renovations After Trump
The Board of Directors at the Kennedy Center is considering naming the location of the renowned arts facility “Donald J. Trump Presidential Plaza.” This initiative is part of several proposals aimed at honoring the former president amidst substantial renovations at the center.
Additionally, the board is exploring the option to engrave “Endowed by the Trump Kennedy Center Foundation” on the building, contingent on the foundation’s endowment reaching $100 million.
This development follows a board meeting where members voted to include a dedication acknowledging President Trump’s contributions during the renovation of the American Cultural Center. Notably, the board also approved a partial closure of the complex for these renovations.
The resolution honoring Trump passed with a significant majority, 20-3, while the closure measure was approved 23-3, according to sources. Key figures who opposed both resolutions included Senator Sheldon Whitehouse and Representatives Joyce Beatty and Rick Larsen.
The proposed inscription below the center’s name would read: “The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump.” This acknowledgment aims to recognize Trump’s pivotal role, particularly since he secured $257 million from Congress for long-overdue maintenance.
The approval of the closure came after an independent analysis concluded that this approach would lead to a surplus of $3.4 million, in stark contrast to the projected $78 million deficit associated with an extended closure.
The planned renovations aim to address numerous issues, including damages from water intrusion, structural problems in the parking area, and safety concerns regarding aging soffit panels.
A spokesperson from the Kennedy Center stated that the board remains committed to the responsible management of the nation’s cultural centers, emphasizing that this revitalization project is expected to strengthen the Kennedy Center’s future as a vital space for the arts.
Despite the renovations and the acknowledgment of Trump’s contributions, free Millennium Stage programs, educational events, and the JFK Memorial Exhibit will continue to be available during the partial closure.
This revised approach follows a prior attempt to rename the center after Trump, which was blocked by a federal judge.
As of now, there has been no response from the White House regarding these developments.
