Board member resigns amid increasing criticism of Tucker Carlson's interview with Nick Fuentes

Resignation at Heritage Foundation Amid Controversy

A prominent conservative legal expert at Princeton University has stepped down from the Heritage Foundation’s board due to disagreements over the organization’s support of an interview featuring Tucker Carlson and far-right figure Nick Fuentes.

Robert P. George, a respected constitutional scholar, is the most recent figure to resign, joining at least seven others from various roles within the think tank as tensions rise internally.

This situation escalated when a video surfaced of Heritage Chairman Kevin Roberts supporting Carlson during a podcast with Fuentes, who has a notorious history of white supremacy.

George announced his resignation, expressing, “I couldn’t stay on the board without a full resignation” after an October 30th video where he spoke on behalf of Heritage. He indicated that while Roberts apologized for some remarks, a complete repudiation was not offered, leading to a stalemate.

His resignation is emblematic of growing fractures within the conservative institution, particularly since Roberts defended Carlson’s actions. In the video, he stated he wouldn’t “cancel” Carlson or Fuentes, despite their troubling backgrounds involving Holocaust denial and antisemitic rhetoric.

The reaction was swift, with members from the Heritage National Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism leaving en masse, alongside several academics and researchers. Roberts’ chief of staff also resigned after amplifying critiques of dissenting staff.

As this turmoil unfolded, it became a rare and public crisis for an organization that has been seen as a paragon of conservative discipline and influence.

George acknowledged that while Roberts is “a good man” who made a mistake, they differed significantly on how to address such errors. His resignation letter reflected this conflict.

A spokesperson for Heritage expressed gratitude toward George, noting his contributions and looking forward to future collaboration. Meanwhile, the think tank affirmed its commitment to fostering an environment of freedom and prosperity under Roberts’ leadership.

Roberts’ comments defending Carlson soon ignited further backlash. In his video response, he described those opposing Carlson’s interview as part of a “toxic coalition,” which some internally likened to anti-Semitic narratives. Although he walked back that wording, it did little to quell the resignations.

A number of members from the Heritage Anti-Semitism Task Force resigned shortly thereafter. Others, like distinguished researcher Chris Demas and senior visiting researcher Stephen Moore, also left the organization. The situation worsened following a tense all-staff meeting, where Roberts faced intense scrutiny and calls for his resignation. He admitted to making mistakes but remained firm on his decision to stay, believing he needed to guide the organization through the turmoil.
