Board taps next superintendent for New Mexico’s largest school district

The Albuquerque Public Schools Board on Monday named the district’s current chief operations officer as its new superintendent.

Gabriela Duran-Blakey will replace current Superintendent Scott Elder, whose contract expires on June 30th. Elder has led New Mexico’s largest school district for more than three years.

Blakey, 48, has worked for APS for more than 20 years as a teacher, assistant principal, principal and assistant superintendent. The Albuquerque native will now oversee instruction and services for the district’s more than 68,000 students and the day-to-day operations of more than 140 schools.

The Albuquerque Public Schools Board of Education unanimously selected Blakey after a national search.

“I am committed to listening and delivering results to ensure we achieve the goals our community has publicly stated for us and our school board,” Blakey said. .
