Bob Costas, a well-known sports announcer and staunch Democratic supporter, accused Democrats of “gaslighting” voters by pretending that President Biden isn’t experiencing an apparent mental breakdown.
Costas has been a staunch anti-Trump figure in recent years, but he has also pointed out some of the Democratic Party’s glaring shortcomings.
In keeping with that theme, the anchor spoke with CNN’s Michael Smerconish and reflected on Biden’s infamous presidential debate performance, which led Democrats to call for him to drop out of the race.
“That awful night just made it clear for years that he was in serious decline,” Costas told Smerconish. “Nobody, including the ghost of Abraham Lincoln, should be president at 85 or 86, but this guy is clearly in decline at this point.”
“And whether he can keep it going for the next four years or not, part of the job is winning the job, and as you just said, that seems all but impossible at this point.”
“It makes me wonder if they’ve been gaslighted by the Democratic Party.”
Costas then explained that Democrats continue to defend Biden despite his apparent cognitive problems.
“Many Democrats are still saying … they list all the reasons why Donald Trump is abhorrent and a threat to democracy and to existence and they say that’s why we must support Joe Biden. No, that’s why we must get rid of Joe Biden,” he clarified. Terrible announcement.
“Biden had the chance to go down in history as a statesman and a patriot. He could have led the American people to avoid a second term for Trump and left office with grace. Now we can no longer indulge in his delusions,” Costas asserted.
The sports broadcaster was arguably ahead of Democrats in calling for Biden’s replacement, with Costas saying in February 2024 that the president was too weak to serve a full second term.
At the time, he said President Joe Biden could “at best” beat Trump in 2024, but that even if he was re-elected, “it’s very likely he won’t serve a full second term.”
“He’ll eventually be 86 years old,” he added.
But whenever the anchor criticizes his own party, he is also criticizing Republicans: first saying Biden is too old to continue, then adding that MAGA supporters belong to a “toxic cult” and are under the “pernicious delusion” of thinking Trump is “emotionally, psychologically, intellectually and ethically” unfit to serve as president of the United States.
A few weeks ago, Trump said it was “madness” for men to participate in women’s sports, but he also said Trump supporters are a “cult” and a “coalition of stupid and… weak-willed people.”
In fact, Costas also attacked Republicans during a recent appearance on CNN, accusing Democrats of gaslighting voters.
“It makes me wonder if he was gaslighted by the Democrats,” he said. “The Republicans specialize in gaslighting everyone under the banner of Trump, but this should have been obvious to those who surrounded the president and those who watched him. If it wasn’t hyperbolic language in this case, wouldn’t it have been an act of patriotism to bring it to the American people?”
