Bob Goff Discusses Faith, Israel, and the Importance of Loving Each Other

Bob Goff’s Journey with Jesus Explores the Holy Land

When you see Bob Goff, the first word that probably comes to mind is joy. Everything he does seems to stem from a wish to help others learn about Jesus. In his latest book, Journey with Jesus, Goff invites readers to explore Israel. He mentions, “This book is for people who work in tire stores, but I like to write for the general public.” As a New York Times bestselling author known for Love Does, Goff thrives on creating engaging content for curious minds, so exploring sacred sites felt like a natural next step. He acknowledges this book stands apart from his previous works. “This time, we imagined taking a tire guy to the Holy Land,” he shares during an interview with Crosswalk magazine, discussing what it might look like if all followers of Christ truly embraced the message of love.

CW: What do you want readers to take away from your book?

BG: I aimed to transport readers to a sacred place and make it vibrant. I want them to visualize the Holy Land and recognize some of the biblical locations mentioned. My hope is to go deeper with a smaller group and foster a shared experience rather than just exchanging information and opinions. Alongside reading the book, I encourage students to watch the accompanying video in small groups. I want them to embark on this adventure with me. Many hardships have shaped this history. I wouldn’t necessarily discuss it with a tire store clerk since it might not resonate with them. It’s important, but I really want people to engage with the land and reflect on its significance in their lives.

CW: What did you experience while writing this book?

BG: I can understand the complex emotions tied to this challenging period from different viewpoints. During the filming, I spent a night in the Golan Heights, close to the Syrian border. I called my wife, Maria, one morning, worrying about potential bombings that could halt our filming. Yet, we managed to walk the paths where Jesus once walked.

CW: If I recall correctly, where are the schools you support?

BG: We’ve had a school in Cana of Galilee for years, welcoming Arab, Christian, Jewish, and Palestinian children. It’s a beautiful environment, centered solely on the children.

CW: How did your affection for Israel develop?

BG: When my children were little, I wrote to the President of Israel, who graciously invited us to visit. My connection to the place grew as I learned about its historical and sacred significance, along with meeting the people I had read about. I didn’t grasp many of these stories until later in life since I wasn’t raised in a church environment.

CW: What was it like visiting a holy site amid ongoing conflict nearby?

BG: We volunteered with a nonprofit and gathered insights. Being there allowed us to offer encouragement to those in high-anxiety regions. I went to listen and make connections. My aim was to be the safest person in the room, and that’s what I encourage my friends to strive for.
