Former Braves Star Bob Horner Passes Away

Bob Horner, a notable figure from the Braves, has unfortunately passed away at the age of 68, as announced by the team on Tuesday.

Drafted as the top pick in 1978, Horner enjoyed a decade-long career in the majors, transitioning from the minors to the big leagues. The specific cause of his death remains undisclosed.

The Atlanta Braves extended their heartfelt condolences to his wife, Chris, their two sons, Tyler and Trent, along with his numerous friends and fans.

Horner’s journey began at Arizona State, where he excelled before being selected first overall by the Braves. He made a quick ascent to the major leagues, showing impressive form—he smashed 23 home runs in just 89 games, earning the National League Rookie of the Year award in 1978.

In the following years, he garnered MVP votes in three of five seasons and was an All-Star in 1982.

Another highlight of his career occurred in 1986 when he achieved the remarkable feat of hitting four home runs in a single game, becoming only the 11th player in MLB history to do so.

Post-1986, Horner became a free agent, yet he found himself without offers, as team owners had colluded to reduce player salaries during a significant labor scandal. This led him to play overseas in Japan before returning to the majors in 1988 to sign with the Cardinals.

Horner eventually retired at just 31 before the 1989 season due to injuries.

The Braves reflected on his legacy, noting, “Bob Horner built his career on being No. 1. After a stellar college career, he was the first Braves draft pick to jump straight to the majors without a stint in the minors. He was also the first Atlanta player to hit four home runs in a game against the Montreal Expos in 1986.”

Horner, who earned the National League Rookie of the Year accolade in 1978 and was an All-Star in 1982, formed one of the most formidable power duos with Dale Murphy for nearly a decade.
