Tragic Air India Plane Crash in Ahmedabad

A tragic accident occurred when an Air India aircraft, carrying 242 individuals, crashed seconds after takeoff in Ahmedabad, India. This incident involved a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, which tragically resulted in the loss of all passengers on board.

Flight AI 171 departed from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport heading to London Gatwick at 1:38 PM local time on a Thursday.

One survivor, identified as Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, shared, “I can’t believe how I survived. For a moment, I thought I was going to die too.”

Reports indicate that the plane lost altitude shortly after leaving the ground, affecting surrounding areas to the southwest. The aircraft reportedly reached a maximum altitude of 625 feet before crashing.

On impact, the plane collided with a building, resulting in an explosion. Boeing issued a statement expressing their readiness to assist Air India and their condolences for those affected.

Authorities in India confirmed that a digital flight data recorder was recovered from the scene, which raised the hopes of investigators looking into the cause of the crash. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau has initiated an investigation, with a team from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board set to assist.

Air India reported that out of the 241 people on board, only one survived: Ramesh, a British citizen of Indian descent. He was among 169 Indian nationals and several others from the UK, Portugal, and Canada.

Ramesh recounted the horrifying moments: “Thirty seconds after takeoff, there was a loud noise, and the plane went down fast. It happened so quickly.” He described waking up surrounded by wreckage and fleeing the scene. “Someone pulled me out and got me to the hospital,” he added.

In an interview, Ramesh expressed disbelief at his survival, recalling, “I thought I wouldn’t make it. But when I opened my eyes, I realized I was alive.” He mentioned escaping through a damaged emergency exit, which offered a slim chance of survival.

Ramesh was traveling to India with his brother, who sadly did not survive the crash. Experts speculate that his seat by the emergency exit likely contributed to his miraculous escape, although they caution against drawing definite conclusions about seat safety based solely on one incident.

This accident marks one of the deadliest aviation disasters since 2014, prompting worldwide attention and concern regarding air safety.
