Standoff Leads to Discovery of Body and Explosives in Connecticut Home
A decomposed body and multiple explosive devices were discovered inside a Connecticut home following an extended standoff. This standoff involved a man who had barricaded himself inside and exchanged gunfire with police, according to authorities.
On Tuesday morning, Stamford police were called to a residence on Oak Lawn Avenue after a sheriff’s office received a 911 call. They were trying to enforce a court order to evict a man from the property.
The man, identified as 63-year-old Jed Parkington, reportedly fired at officers multiple times throughout the day, hitting a patrol car. Fortunately, no officers were injured during this exchange.
Later that day, Parkington was found dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police reported.
Police Chief Timothy Shaw mentioned in a statement that while officers were clearing out the home after the standoff, they stumbled upon the decomposed body on the second floor. The authorities also discovered various explosives, including pipe bombs, grenades, and Molotov cocktails.
“This was an extremely dangerous incident that tragically resulted in the loss of two lives,” Shaw stated.
Authorities praised the collaborative efforts of local, state, and federal law enforcement, including those who tried to negotiate with Parkington for several hours. The Stamford Police Bomb Squad was summoned to the scene to safely remove the explosives before investigators continued searching the home.
The identity of the decomposed individual and the cause of death are currently being investigated.
In a related note, the state Office of Inspector General is looking into the use of deadly force by officers during this standoff.
Court documents reveal that the bank had foreclosed on the property due to unpaid mortgage payments and requested the residents vacate the home in April. A judge ordered the eviction last month, after giving the residents a window to pay what they owed.
