French maritime authorities say a search is underway for two people feared missing after bodies were discovered on the dangerous route across the English Channel used by migrants seeking to enter the UK from France. .

Around 180 people were rescued in four French-coordinated rescue operations on Wednesday, the maritime authority that oversees French waters in the Channel said in a statement.

The statement said some of those rescued told the crew of a French naval vessel that three people had gone missing during the river crossing.
One person, who could not be resuscitated, was found during a search by French Navy boats and helicopters. Two other people are still missing.

“We can confirm that there has been an incident involving a small boat in the French Channel. French authorities are leading the response and investigation,” the British government said in a statement.
