Body Language Expert Analyzes Arrest of Suspect in CEO Murder Case
A body language specialist has identified various “red flags” exhibited by Luigi Mangione during his arrest by Pennsylvania State Police, related to the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024.
On December 9, 2024, police released body camera footage capturing the moment an officer confronted Mangione at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania. An employee at the restaurant noticed something suspicious about him, which prompted a call to law enforcement.
According to body language expert Susan Constantine, Mangione displayed significant signs of distress when approached by police. She mentioned that his initial reaction—a kind of frozen look, wide eyes, and a lowered mouth—was telling. “He doesn’t deny it or defend himself, which is a big red flag. You’d expect some kind of question or clarification from someone innocent,” she remarked, emphasizing the oddity of his silence.
Constantine pointed out how Mangione was positioned awkwardly in the corner of the restaurant, fully masked, which suggested he might have had “dangerous intent.” She added, “It’s strange for someone to hide in plain sight like that, especially wearing a hat pulled low and looking down.” Clearly, he was trying not to be noticed.
She observed that Mangione’s confidence appeared to wane when he realized he had to present his driver’s license, noting a visible fear in his demeanor. “You could see he understood that it was over,” she explained. “His shoulders dropped, and he looked more huddled. It was quite different from how others in the restaurant were behaving.” The stark difference highlighted him as an anomaly in that setting.
The initial tip that led to the 911 call came from the McDonald’s employee who suspected Mangione resembled the alleged shooter of CEO Thompson. The restaurant manager also alerted the police, saying this customer seemed like the suspect from the New York case.
Officer Christy Wasser testified that she found a loaded magazine hidden in wet underwear case in Mangione’s backpack, adding to the suspicious nature of his arrest.
Currently, Mangione faces multiple charges at both the state and federal levels, including a potential death penalty. The movement of the case is ongoing as more details continue to emerge.
