The body of a construction worker who went missing atop Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, which collapsed last week, has been found, authorities said.
The unified command, which includes the U.S. Coast Guard and Maryland government agencies, said in a press statement. release The body of Mayor Yasir Suazo-Sandoval, 38, was recovered by a diving team around 10:30 a.m. Friday, the statement said.
“The Joint Command Rescue Dive Team located a person believed to be a missing construction worker and notified the Maryland State Police,” the release states. “The Maryland State Police Underwater Recovery Team, in conjunction with partner law enforcement dive teams, responded and recovered Suazo Sandoval.”
The statement also said Maryland State Police, FBI Victim Specialists, the Baltimore County Emergency Response Team, and investigators from the Governor’s Office of Immigration Affairs “met with Ms. Suazo-Sandoval’s family and notified them.”
“The collapse of the Key Bridge is without a doubt one of the most difficult tragedies we have faced as a law enforcement agency. Together with our local, state, and federal public safety partners, we will not give up,” Maryland said. State Police Chief Col. Roland L. Butler Jr. said in a release.
“There are families who are still waiting to hear if their loved one has been found. We are committed to doing everything in our power to find closure for each of these families,” Butler continued.
President Biden visited Baltimore on Friday and said he would “move heaven and earth” to rebuild the bridge.
“What I’m trying to say here is your country is rooting for you. And I mean it. Your country is protecting you,” Biden said of the bridge. He spoke against the backdrop of ruins.
The president also noted the six people killed in the bridge collapse, saying, “The damage is devastating and our hearts are still broken.”
