Body of missing California teenager Brian Gallardo discovered in Truckee River after drowning in Floriston

Authorities have reported the discovery of a 19-year-old California teenager’s body, who had gone missing after swimming in the cold waters of the Truckee River. Brian Gallardo disappeared on Saturday near Floriston, prompting an extensive search effort by the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office.

Rescue teams, including K9 units, helicopters, drones, and a number of ground searchers, were deployed in the search. On Monday, divers from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office located Gallardo’s body.

“The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) recognizes this case as a profound loss for a young man and a significant loss for his family and friends,” officials stated.

The incident highlights the dangers associated with drownings, which can escalate quickly and have lasting impacts on families and communities, the NCSO noted.

As reported by KCRA 3, the river’s conditions have been hazardous due to increased currents from excessive snowmelt runoff, with water temperatures reported around 44 degrees. The authorities urge the public to exercise caution while swimming in such conditions.

Gallardo, who hailed from Petaluma, was remembered as “charismatic, ambitious, kind, and deeply loved” by those who knew him, as expressed on a GoFundMe page established by his girlfriend’s mother.

“He had goals he wanted to achieve, but sadly this tragic event did not allow him to reach them. We are heartbroken by this untimely tragedy and are seeking ways to support one another during this tough time,” the fund’s description stated.

A photo showing Gallardo smiling with his girlfriend at the river just before the incident underlines the heartache felt by those close to him.

The GoFundMe campaign has raised nearly $7,000 towards its $12,000 goal to assist with funeral expenses and support for Gallardo’s family.
