Haley McNeff, a celebrated bodybuilding champion, passed away last Friday, with the news confirmed on Wednesday.
She was just 37 years old.
Haley hailed from Concord, Massachusetts, as detailed in various obituaries.
“Haley was like the light of this world. She had endless energy and was very determined to achieve anything she was trying to do,” her father, Dave, remarked in a statement. “She focused on bodybuilding and fitness, and reached significant heights in that field. She loved us and we loved her deeply.”
McNeff’s family plans to hold a service on Saturday and has asked attendees to consider making a donation to the National Alliance on Mental Illness in her honor.
As noted in the obituary, McNeff was a talented bodybuilder, having graduated from Concord Carlisle High School and the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where she earned state titles during the 2000s. She also appeared in the 2005 documentary “Raising the Bar,” which explored the sports world.
“The quest to become huge will never end,” McNeff stated about her journey in the documentary. “There are no limits. I hope for days when I can look in the mirror and fully appreciate it.”
After exiting the competitive scene, McNeff chose to pursue a graduate degree in psychology.
“She had a unique ability to make those around her laugh and feel at ease,” the obituary mentions. “Her boundless energy and determination influenced her life significantly, allowing her to achieve her goals. She truly valued her friendships, maintaining strong connections with those who knew her best. Haley will be deeply missed by her parents, siblings, extended family, and friends.”
Bodybuilding coach Dave Palumbo reflected on McNeff’s passing in an Instagram tribute. “It’s sad to hear that former female bodybuilder @hayleysmash has passed away…she left us too early,” he wrote. “She was a good soul, very intelligent, and had amazing potential. I was proud to have known her.”
Her passing is part of a troubling trend, as several bodybuilders have died recently. Notably, Zunila Hoyos Mendez was tragically killed in June at the age of 43, and GUI Bull also passed away at just 30.
