Dramatic footage from body cameras captures a New York City police officer saving a woman who found herself trapped on the steel cables of the Brooklyn Bridge, dangling over the East River. This incident occurred on Wednesday evening, around 7:38 p.m., when emergency services received a distress call regarding a person in peril.
Video from the scene shows officers making their way up the bridge to reach the woman, whose legs were hanging off the edge. “I just want to talk,” one officer called out, asking, “What’s going on today?” He engaged in conversation to encourage her acceptance of help.
As they waited for the right moment to act, the officer reassured her, saying, “I want to help, that’s why I’m here.” He emphasized, “It’s a permanent solution to a temporary problem,” displaying empathy and a desire to understand her situation. “The strongest thing you can do right now is accept help,” he stated earnestly.
The woman was gripping one cable with one arm while standing on another. Eventually, the officer managed to close the distance, wrapping his arm around her and pulling her to safety. “Please stop, please stop,” he reassured her during the tense moment, assuring her everything would be alright.
Authorities reported that the negotiation lasted nearly an hour, resulting in a successful rescue. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch shared the body camera footage online and praised the brave conduct of the officers involved, stating the scenes were “breathtaking.” She added that the compassion and courage shown was extraordinary, particularly given the rescue took place during rush hour, which led to the closure of eastbound lanes on the bridge for several hours.
