Bodycam reportedly captures Palestine activist's violent sledgehammer attack on officer

Trial of Pro-Palestinian Activists Involving Police Confrontation

Footage from police body cameras presented on November 24 captured pro-Palestinian activists clashing with British police. In a notable moment, one activist is accused of striking an officer with a sledgehammer.

Currently, six members of the pro-Palestinian group Palestine Action are facing trial for participating in a break-in at a factory owned by Elbit Systems, Israel’s largest arms manufacturer, that occurred in August 2024. Prosecutors allege that the group executed a “well-organized” operation involving a prison van.

The defendants—Charlotte Head, 29; Samuel Corner, 23; Leona Camio, 30; Fatema Rajwani, 21; Zoe Rogers, 22; and Jordan Devlin, 31—have been charged with aggravated theft, criminal damage, and violent disorder, all of which they deny. Notably, Corner refutes the allegation of hitting officer Kate Evans with the sledgehammer.

In the body camera footage, police response to the break-in is evident. It features an officer using a Taser on an activist dressed in orange, who was vandalizing property and attempting to resist arrest.

Throughout the video, activists can be seen grappling with officers and defying orders, some shouting statements like, “We don’t have to do that.”

One scene illustrates a female officer handcuffing an activist while another activist strikes her from behind with the sledgehammer.

As the situation escalated, a Taser was deployed, and an officer restrained the activist on the ground, which provided a glimpse into the chaos unfolding.

Amid the turmoil, an officer heard the first suspect remark, “What, you idiot, why would you do that?” In response, another officer questioned the female officer’s wellbeing after acknowledging the assault.

The female officer, still on the ground, replied, “I think so,” while the commotion continued around her.

A different angle of the same incident displayed the alleged attacker raising the sledgehammer high before striking the officer.

Reports indicate that the female officer suffered significant injuries, including a fractured vertebra. She later recounted her experience in court, noting a moment of shock followed by intense pain as the blow struck her back.

Post-incident, the officer stated the attacker accused them of being “complicit in genocide,” to which she replied that he had harmed her. However, he seemingly dismissed her pain, focusing instead on his own claims.

The Palestine Action group faced bans under British terrorism laws after previous allegations of property destruction at a Royal Air Force base.

Avon and Somerset police have not commented on inquiries regarding the situation.
