BoJ likely to increase rates as early as September

Kihara from Japan expresses concern over swift, one-sided actions in the foreign exchange market.

The Bank of Japan is considering increasing interest rates as soon as September, with expectations of a more aggressive approach moving forward, according to three sources familiar with the central bank’s thoughts, as reported by Reuters.

This potential rate hike is anticipated to address inflationary pressures linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict, robust global demand for AI technologies, and ongoing concerns regarding the Japanese yen’s persistent weakness, despite a recent coordinated effort with the U.S. to stabilize the currency.

“An interest rate increase could be on the horizon,” one source mentioned, indicating that a decision could come at the upcoming policy meeting on September 17th and 18th.

“The Bank of Japan might also speed up the frequency of rate hikes,” another source echoed, suggesting agreement among insiders on this possibility.

Market Reaction

As of now, the USD/JPY exchange rate is down by 0.04%, trading around 159.43.
