Bomani Jones said on his podcast this week that if an NFL team has a Black starting quarterback, it likely also has a Black backup, or “blackup.”

The former ESPN host said the team is doing so to avoid backlash and is seeking white backups to replace black starters.

Jones made this comment while speaking with Mina Kimes, noting that the Cleveland Browns brought in Jameis Winston as Deshaun Watson’s backup instead of keeping Joe Flacco.

“The Browns are continuing what they’ve been doing and signing every black backup quarterback they can find.” Jones said. “The new mastermind is Jameis Winston because we need to put him behind Deshaun Watson’s meanness to stop fans from demanding something else. We couldn’t bring him back because he would start some kind of rebellion.”

Jones all but guarantees who the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL Draft will be.

“You’ll notice the New England Patriots. I’m surprised they did something like this. They went and signed Jacoby Brissett. That signals Jaden Daniels coming to town. ,” Jones said. “If I were Jerrod Mayo, I probably would have tried to distance myself from this a little bit.

“I don’t know what responsibility the white players will take in this, but they want Boston to get behind the first black quarterback they’ve always wanted.”

Additionally, Jones said the Las Vegas Raiders are in dire need of a quarterback and are letting Justin Fields go because newly appointed head coach Antonio Pierce has “worked hard enough to get this job.” He said he might have to.

“please look, [Baltimore] “Ravens,” Jones added. “Every backup the Ravens have acquired since they lured Joe Flacco out of town is a roll call.” Lamar Jackson’s backups the past few seasons have been Tyler Huntley and Anthony Brown.

But Kimes noted that Gardner Minshew, who is white, was Anthony Richardson’s backup for the Colts in Indianapolis.

“Colts fans, if you want Minshew instead of Richardson, Colts fans actually watch every Colts game, so they’re one of the few people who understand how bad Minshew was last year. I think I’m one of them,” she said.
