The bomb squad detonated a suspicious device found at Utah State University prior to the Turning Point USA event on Tuesday afternoon.
Authorities were called to the scene on Tuesday after reports of devices located just outside a building on the university campus. In light of “recent concerns,” school officials had already heightened security for the Turning Point USA gathering. This marked the first event since the shooting incident involving TPUSA founder Charlie Kirk. Although the device was deemed “non-explosive,” footage captured members of the bomb squad shouting “fire in the hole” before the detonation.
“A suspicious device was located outside the old main building. University staff and local law enforcement were quickly involved. The devices, although considered non-explosive, were detonated for safety. The area around the old main is now clear and safe,” an official stated.
Elisbrucci, who oversees public safety at Utah State University, mentioned that employees had previously designated certain plants under the trees to monitor them and alerted the necessary authorities.
“Due to the escalating concerns, the USU Public Safety Administration is collaborating with partners to ensure that proper safety protocols are followed,” the university explained.
Charlie Kirk, age 31, was shot while speaking at a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University on September 10. He is survived by his wife Erica and their two children.
