Bonnie Tyler Undergoes Emergency Surgery in Portugal

Famed pop singer Bonnie Tyler has been admitted to a hospital in Portugal for emergency surgery, according to her recent announcement. The 74-year-old star underwent a successful procedure for bowel issues.

“It is with great regret that we announce that Bonnie has been admitted to a hospital in her hometown of Faro, Portugal, for emergency intestinal surgery,” the statement shared. “The surgery was successful, and she is currently recovering. We know her family, friends, and fans are concerned and wish her a speedy recovery.”

Born Gaynor Hopkins, Tyler made her debut in the music industry back in 1976 with the hit “Lost in France.” Over the years, she solidified her place as a worldwide sensation with popular tracks like “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Holding Out for a Hero.”

Despite the ups and downs of her career, she has remained a staple in Europe, participating in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013 and currently celebrating her 50th anniversary in music with a Jubilee tour. “Tours keep me going,” she mentioned, emphasizing her working-class roots. She also noted her pride in moving her parents to a nicer home, reflecting her deep personal values.

While her most famous song dates back to the 1980s, “Total Eclipse of the Heart” has become an enduring anthem, especially during eclipses. “I still feel a rush when I hear it on the radio,” she mentioned in an interview. “Every time there’s a solar eclipse, people worldwide celebrate with my song, and I never get tired of performing it.”

Interestingly, the song was crafted by Jim Steinman, known for collaborating with icons like Meat Loaf and Celine Dion. It even found renewed popularity ahead of the total solar eclipse in April 2024, charting remarkably well on platforms like iTunes and YouTube.

Tyler has been happily married to Robert Sullivan, a former Olympic judo athlete, since 1973. They share their time between homes in Wales and Portugal. Reflecting on their relationship, she shared, “We met before I was famous, which I think is crucial to our success.” Although they never had children, Tyler expressed her affection for her nieces and nephews, joking about her home feeling like a busy station with family visiting often.

As she recuperates, fans will surely be hoping for good news and a swift return to the stage for the beloved singer.
