Tunnel Discovery by US Border Patrol

Recently, US Border Patrol agents encountered a drug smuggling tunnel situated nearly 3,000 feet below the US-Mexico border. The tunnel, linking Tijuana to San Diego, was uncovered during ongoing construction efforts in early April.

According to US Customs and Border Protection, the tunnel passed through parts of the Otay Mesa port and had anticipated exit points in or near commercial warehouse areas in San Diego.

Upon entering the “very sophisticated” passage, authorities found a barricade seemingly erected to deter law enforcement from locating the entrance, as noted in their announcement.

This tunnel spans 2,918 feet, standing 42 inches tall and 28 inches wide, with an estimated depth of around 50 feet underground.

It featured lighting, electrical wiring, ventilation systems, and mechanisms designed for transporting significant amounts of illicit goods.

In collaboration with Homeland Security Investigations and Mexican authorities, Border Patrol agents located the tunnel’s entrance on Monday inside a residence in Tijuana’s Nueva Tijuana area. Interestingly, the entrance was recently concealed with newly laid tiles.

Efforts by US Customs and Border Protection include pouring thousands of gallons of concrete into tunnels to thwart potential use by foreign terrorist organizations.

Jeffrey D. Starnaker, chief patrol agent for the San Diego Sector, commented, “As we continue to strengthen our country’s air and maritime border security, it is no surprise that foreign terrorist organizations will rely on underground routes. The disruption of drug smuggling tunnels is vital to protecting American life.”

Since 1993, more than 95 tunnels have been dismantled in the San Diego region. As of now, US Customs and Border Protection has not responded to requests for further comments.
