British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said President Trump's recent remarks on Ukraine were intended to “shock” Europe.
“When will Europeans be scandalized about Donald Trump and start helping him to end this war?” Johnson posted to X on Wednesday.
European leaders were shocked when Trump took steps to end the war between Russia and Ukraine. Eight major European leaders met on Monday to coordinate the response as Ukraine was sidelined by Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin during peace talks.
Trump denounced Ukrainian President Voldimi Zelensky on Tuesday evening, claiming he had done a “terrifying job” leading the country in the war.
Zelensky replied, saying that Trump lives in a “disinformation space” in Russia. He asked the Trump administration to be “more truthful” about what was going on.
Zelensky said he “knowed nothing” about peace debates in the Middle East until they were already publicly announced.
European officials had expected it to be completely out of international defense spending, but they didn't expect it to be completely excluded from peace talks.
Johnson has expressed his support for Europe as European leaders have expressed concern over Trump and Putin's intimacy.
“Trump's statement is not intended to be historically accurate, but is intended to shock Europeans with their actions,” Johnson said.
“The US believes Belgium, France and other countries are blocking,” he concluded. “That's ridiculous. You have to be serious and fast.”
