A newspaper in another major city called on President Biden to give up re-election after he was harshly criticized for his performance in last week’s debate with former President Trump.
The Boston Globe editorial board on Wednesday Published column They argue that the risks of Biden running at this point are too great and that he should step aside immediately to allow a more suitable Democratic candidate to be nominated.
“For the sake of the country, for the sake of his party and for the sake of his legacy, Biden must do this — and do it soon,” he declared.

The Globe editorial began by criticizing the Biden campaign for failing to “adequately” explain “why his performance was historically poor, other than that he had a cold.” It went on to reject allies’ defense that keeping Biden in office remains the country’s least risky bet for beating Trump, and that trying to pick a new party nominee is too risky.
“Perhaps so. But in the view of this committee, and a growing number of editorialists and Democratic insiders, there are greater risks in allowing Biden to continue as the party’s standard-bearer,” the committee wrote. “Serious doubts have been raised about his ability to complete the difficult task of leading the free world. Can he negotiate a hostile Republican Congress, dangerous foreign powers, and even feuding rivals in his Cabinet? Public confidence is shaken.”
The Boston Globe’s editorial board’s column follows those from editorial boards at other major news organizations that have criticized Biden’s debate performance and argued that it’s time for him to drop out of the race.
The day after the debate, The New York Times editorial board called the president’s continued campaign a “reckless gamble” and declared that “the greatest public service Mr. Biden can do now is to announce that he will not run for reelection.”
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution editorial board called for an end to Biden’s campaign over the weekend, saying “President Biden needs the shadow of retirement.”
An editorial in the Boston Globe noted that polls before the “disastrous debate” were already showing Biden in poor light, and now “Biden’s chances of winning over wavering independents, much less retaining his loyal supporters, are rapidly fading.”

The committee said the only “ray of hope” was for Biden to “step back gracefully” and “free up his delegates” to new candidates “from Vice President Kamala Harris to the governors of Michigan, Pennsylvania and California, to name just a few.”
After detailing how the ensuing short-term delegate elections would play out, the committee stressed that Biden was once again the only person standing in the way of a Democratic victory, urged him to step down and advised Democrats to step in if necessary.
“He should withdraw from the race himself, but he seems unwilling to do so. His wife and children are also said to be against the idea. But with the future of the country at stake, this is not a decision that should be made by one family alone. It is time for the Democratic Party itself, which has never been good at behaving like a political party, to enter the fray,” the editorial said.
He also outlined the policies the party should use to persuade the president to step down.
“If he withdraws from the race now, his party will greet him as a hero. If he stays and loses, it will be a disaster for the country. Democrats would likely lose both houses of Congress, removing any checks on Mr. Trump’s excesses and allowing the appointment of another right-wing justice to the most conservative Supreme Court in decades,” the committee argued.

The committee also advised that if Biden’s team remains determined to certify his eligibility to run, “it would likely subject Biden to multiple interviews with critical reporters.”
“They’ll let him do more of a less-than-supervised campaign stunt without the aid of a teleprompter. They’ll put him in public positions that show he can think on his feet.”
The editorial ended by urging leading Democrats to speak out against Biden running for re-election, declaring that “the time for silence has passed.”
