Boston Hands Over Soldiers’ Home to Migrant Families

Boston authorities are preparing to turn over the city’s former Chelsea Soldiers’ Home to house undocumented immigrants as Democratic Gov. Maura Healey’s administration looks for more space to house immigrants.

Healey’s office said the Soldiers’ Home facility will be used next to house migrants because the current shelters are “over capacity.”

The facility will soon house about 100 families, according to city reports.

The city has instituted a new requirement for undocumented immigrants applying to stay in shelters to enroll in a state program aimed at weaning them off dependence on state aid.

“We’ve been saying for months that our system is at capacity and we don’t have the space, providers or funding to continue expanding,” said Scott Rice, director of emergency assistance. Said by boston herald. “This new certification policy is a responsible step to address capacity constraints at our safety net sites. Families must demonstrate that they have taken actions to move from shelter to independence. There is.”

Applicants must look for work or attend a training program.

Meanwhile, hundreds more are still heading into the city.

City officials are scrambling to find ways to deal with President Joe Biden’s wave of misconduct. There is also a proposal to have civilians take illegal families into their homes.

The city also redirected millions of dollars in city services to care for immigrants.

However, many residents do not exactly accept this plan.

Local families in Boston’s predominantly black Roxbury neighborhood were outraged in February when the city closed a community center and used it instead as a detention facility for Biden’s illegal border crossers.

The Healey government also received criticism for holding migrants at Logan International Airport.

The state reported in February that it plans to spend $1 billion to feed migrants by 2025.
