Boston mayor promises to keep opposing Trump's deportation plans

Boston Mayor’s Rally Against Deportation Threats

Boston’s Mayor Michelle Wu is set to hold a rally on Tuesday to emphasize her stance against the federal government’s push for large-scale deportations. This comes in response to threats from the Trump administration to withdraw federal funding unless Boston complies with their deportation plans.

Wu disclosed that the U.S. Department of Justice issued a letter indicating it would “withhold federal funds unless city officials assist with implementing a massive deportation.” She criticized the Trump administration for creating “fear and harm” among communities nationwide through strict immigration enforcement.

While acknowledging the “serious” nature of the situation, Wu stated, “silence in the face of oppression is not an option!” She also mentioned that she was asked for a response by Tuesday.

“Here’s our response: Stop attacking cities to cover up the administration’s failures. Unlike the Trump administration, Boston adheres to the law. We will not waver in who we are or what we believe in,” she added, reinforcing her commitment to the community.

At the rally, Senator Ed Markey (D-Mass.) voiced his support, declaring that “Trump hopes Boston will bend to his desire for absolute control, but not today. Boston will stand firm.” Meanwhile, Tricia McLaughlin from the Department of Homeland Security commented that Wu’s refusal to cooperate with deportation efforts could put lives at risk.

“American lives are at stake. Politicians like Mayor Wu are playing a dangerous game with the safety of Americans,” McLaughlin remarked, referencing recent criminal cases in Boston involving individuals previously undocumented.

Additionally, she noted that the DHS plans to ramp up hiring, with Ice currently working to bring on 10,000 new agents due to Wu’s lack of cooperation.

Concerns have been raised about undocumented individuals, some classified as violent criminals, being released into public spaces while Boston disregards U.S. immigration and customs enforcement policies. After President Trump placed the Washington D.C. police under federal control, local officers were ordered to cooperate with ICE, effectively nullifying the sanctuary policies set by city Democrats.
