Boston Mayor's Guidelines for Delivery Drivers Condemned as 'Excessive'

New Boston Ordinance Impacts Food Delivery Services

A recent ordinance in Boston could lead to significant costs for food delivery companies. This regulation, which took effect last weekend, affects popular platforms like DoorDash, Uber Eats, and Grubhub.

Boston’s Mayor, Michelle Wu, associated with the Democratic Party, had initially proposed this measure, stating it was focused on safety. The implementation was originally planned for February 2025.

Wu emphasized the importance of this ordinance for improving the safety of pedestrians and drivers, while also ensuring that delivery app drivers have proper insurance from the national companies they work for. She noted that Boston aims to be a leader in regulating developing technologies safely and effectively.

However, DoorDash expressed skepticism, arguing that the new regulations might not enhance safety as intended and could lead to higher costs for customers.

Under the new rules, delivery companies must register with the city, acquire permits, insure their drivers, and share data with the Boston Department of Transportation. Non-compliance could incur daily fines or penalties per order, potentially reaching hundreds of dollars.

Critics have taken to social media to air their discontent. One post pointed out that this is the first permit system for delivery workers in the U.S., suggesting that the $300 daily fine approach is an example of excessive governmental control, especially since Amazon appears to be exempt.

Moreover, the Boston City Council is also considering a ban on food deliveries by moped riders.

In a recent public appearance, both Governor Maura Healey and Mayor Wu faced a less-than-warm reception, receiving boos at a Red Sox game. This reaction may tie back to their controversial positions on illegal immigration. Governor Healey recently urged airlines to halt flights for ICE operations aimed at deporting undocumented individuals, while Mayor Wu accused federal immigration agents of conducting inappropriate enforcement activities in the city.
