Boston Police Allegedly Collaborating with ICE Amid Mayor’s Policies
Boston police are reportedly protesting against Mayor Michelle Wu’s progressive stance by discreetly providing immigration enforcement personnel with information regarding criminal offenses, as stated by Todd Lyons, the acting director of ICE.
Wu has garnered attention among some Democratic mayors for opposing federal immigration laws, openly accepting undocumented immigrants, and instructing her administration to limit the enforcement actions of ICE and other federal authorities.
According to Lyons, many officers within the Boston Police Department are torn between their duties and the city’s policies.
“They can’t support us openly because they fear repercussions, such as losing their jobs. Still, they find ways to assist us,” Lyons mentioned during an interview on Wednesday.
He also noted that Boston isn’t the only city experiencing this type of underlying support from local law enforcement.
“This issue isn’t isolated to Boston. Numerous jurisdictions have police officers who are very supportive of ICE and wish to collaborate behind the scenes,” he continued. “Local leaders seem unaware of this reality. It’s essential for them to engage with their officers on the ground because many undocumented individuals continue to commit crimes that local police have to address.”
In response, Wu criticized ICE officers, characterizing their actions as reminiscent of neo-Nazi tactics and labeling them as part of Trump’s “secret police.”
However, Lyons did not respond positively to Wu’s remarks, indicating that ICE intends to intensify its immigration law enforcement efforts despite her claims.
“We definitely plan to take action, especially in sanctuary jurisdictions,” Lyons told a speaker affiliated with conservative groups. “Choosing to remain a sanctuary doesn’t equate to safer streets; it often leads to more crime in the community. But rest assured, ICE will maintain a visible presence.”
