Boston Mayor Responds to Trump Meeting
On Monday, Democratic Mayor of Boston, Michelle Wu, expressed to reporters that she has no interest in forming a close relationship with the Trump administration, particularly after New York Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani had recent friendly discussions with the president.
“I’m not looking for a bromance with the federal government,” Wu stated. This remark came following a meeting Mamdani had with President Trump at the White House on Friday, where Trump referred to Mamdani as a “reasonable person.” The friendly atmosphere of their conversation attracted attention, especially given their previous clashes.
“From my point of view, flattery isn’t the right approach,” Wu noted. She believes Boston residents value integrity and want progress. “That’s what we’re focused on,” she added.
When asked about Wu’s perspective, Mamdani acknowledged his prior stance, reiterating that he sees Trump as a potential threat to democracy. However, he emphasized the importance of working across the aisle to better the lives of constituents.
Wu has been critical of the administration’s immigration policies and has stood firm on Boston’s status as a sanctuary city. “What if that meant a promise to stop unlawfully detaining individuals, or stopping the persecution of political adversaries?” she questioned. “I’d certainly be open to a dialogue in that scenario.”
Moreover, Mamdani is known for his activism on reparations and addressing systemic disrespect toward Black lives in America. Wu, during an August press conference, accused Trump’s administration of flouting the law. She reflected on the serious threats posed by the current federal government, suggesting it has incited fear and damage within communities.
Despite the meeting, Mamdani maintained his views about the president, labeling him as a fascist. “Everything I’ve previously said still stands,” he remarked during an interview.
Mamdani described his discussions with Trump as forthright regarding their differences, remaining optimistic about focusing on common U.S. interests, especially concerning issues like the affordability crisis.
As of now, neither the White House nor Mamdani’s team has issued any comments regarding these developments.
