The Louisiana Attorney General intervened to sentence him to a severe sentence for a past crime committed by a woman arrested after the death of Kansas City-based reporter Telemundo during Super Bowl Week in New Orleans.
Danette Colbert was arrested in February at Jefferson Parrish and charged with fraud and theft, allegedly using his debit and credit card. Adan Manzanofound dead in a hotel room outside New Orleans, covering the Super Bowl of local Telemund affiliate KGKC in Dallas.
The Orleans Parish Coroner reportedly found Xanax in the Manzano system. He had no prescription for medication.
Colbert was reportedly seen in hotel security footage with Manzano early in the morning of his death in Kenner, leading to suspicions that he had received drugs.

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Maril called for the state's habitual criminal bill against Colbert.
Colbert, 45, is a felony convicted five times. Reported by Nola.com.
Despite her long criminal history, Orleans Criminal District Court Judge Nandi Campbell gave Colbert a 10-year suspended sentence and five years of probation after his November conviction.

The habitual offenders bill allows prosecutors to seek longer sentences for repeated offenders who have been previously convicted of eligible offences.
“After consultation with Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams, my office will handle future cases through jurisdictional acts,” Maril said in a statement. “An application to amend an illegal sentence can be filed at any time. The District Attorney's Office has already filed a revocation on the defendant's probation, and our position was that the original sentence was not subject to probation.”
Colbert has not been charged with Manzano's death, but is still held without custody while Mariel's office asks Campbell to impose a strict sentence.

Nola.com reported that she was nominated as a suspect in the death of a 55-year-old man named John Jenkins, who died of cocaine and ethanol toxicity on December 15, just days after all charges of fraud and theft were collected against Colbert in Manzano's death.
Colbert has also not been charged with his death.
In response to news of his death, KGKC described Manzano as “a true professional and upstart that exemplified the excellence of his work.”
